Springtails are named for their springy tails! Many species have a tail-like appendage at the end of their abdomen that is typically folded underneath their body and held under tension. At the first sign of danger, they can release the tension and their furcula will snap against the substrate to fling them out of harm’s way - all within a couple of milliseconds.
