Position:

Interpretive Naturalist & Student Engagement Coordinator

About Christa:

I started at The Arboretum in May 2022 as a Summer Naturalist before joining the team as an Interpretive Naturalist in May 2023, and I've been here ever since! My formal education is in zoology and I am currently pursuing a Master of Environmental Science degree part-time, but my work is based around anything and everything in the natural world. I strive to share my passion and excitement for learning about nature with the diverse groups of people that I work with - everyone from kindergarteners to university students to the general public and specialized community groups.

Plants and insects are what got me started but I am particularly interested in understanding how everything interacts within an ecosystem and taking a more whole-system perspective.

What is your favourite thing about The Arboretum?

My favourite thing about the Arboretum is walking through Wild Goose Woods throughout the year, seeing how much the forest changes throughout the seasons!

The land where The Arboretum now grows has been home to plants and animals for thousands of years. It was home to Indigenous peoples long before settlers arrived. We recognize the traditional, ancestral, and treaty lands of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee, Attawandaron, and Mississaugas of the Credit peoples, as well as the Dish with One Spoon covenant covering the Between the Lakes Treaty 3 lands on which the University of Guelph and The Arboretum now sit. We are honoured to work on and care for this land.
