Annual Report 2021

2021Throughout the pandemic we have seen a significant increase in the number of people accessing The Arboretum. Even with our buildings closed to the public and our volunteer program on pause our trails, gardens, and natural areas remained open to the public for walk through access, serving as a vital connection to nature for our community. Our dedicated staff continued with essential operational work and time-sensitive research on our living collections, and adopted safety measure to serve students and researchers, and created virtual nature education programs for children and other unable to visit. In 2021, our accreditation with ArbNet and Botanic Garden Conservation International was upgraded to Level IV, the highest rank, which recognizes the long-standing efforts of professionalization, outreach, conservation,
and curatorial merit.

The land where The Arboretum now grows has been home to plants and animals for thousands of years. It was home to Indigenous peoples long before settlers arrived. We recognize the traditional, ancestral, and treaty lands of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee, Attawandaron, and Mississaugas of the Credit peoples, as well as the Dish with One Spoon covenant covering the Between the Lakes Treaty 3 lands on which the University of Guelph and The Arboretum now sit. We are honoured to work on and care for this land.
